Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

  6. Open Soul
Review: Given his renowned crate-digging credentials, it's little surprise that Floating Points is a big fan of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. The thing is, though, it's a terrific album, as this welcome reissue on the producer's Melodies International imprint proves. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

  3. Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!) (5:42)
  4. Party Marty (5:47)
Review: The Detroit badman always delivers the goods, but he'd recently focussed on his more house-centric style thanks to a series of sleek, soulful releases. This time, he's come out all guns blazing with this new four-part killer, led by the absolutely nutty groove that is "Sink Holes" - a proper slice of Omar S acid, delivered in fine style and with his inimitable rawness. "HELL ON EARTH" is a moodier, funkier house tip with a jazzy side, while the flipside's "Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!)" is a fast, upbeat house bomb with a crazy little disco sample that floats amid the grainy bass drums. "Party Marty" is a no nonsense kind of lick, pouncing away with a steady, yet unmistakably Omar S-style percussion, and a heavy bass blow. This is one hell of a way to make an appearance this early in the year - highly recommended!!

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: Amongst the hustle and bustle of the Parisian house music scene Politics Of Dancing have been doing great things for the past three years. Now S.M.A.L.L and Paco are celebrating what they have achieved so far with a 12" that welcomes some highly respected characters to the label alongside familiar favourites. Janeret is on killer form with "First Light", using shimmering dub chords to course their way through a rock solid house beat in a simple but utterly effective style, before D'julz demonstrates his instinct for a killer hook with the organ-led fun and games of "Organic". Djebali keeps things tight and funky on "Aliahs", before the label bosses themselves round the record off with the irrepressible pump of "One & Only".

Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Review: Second time around for Peven Everett's "Put Your Back Into It", which has become an in-demand record since it first hit stores 10 years ago. This official reissue replicates the track listing of the original pressing. Everett's original version is an undulating, soft-spun deep house delight, with the producer adding his own superb, soul-soaked versions to a backing track rich in shuffling, floor-friendly drums, warm bass and jazzy keys. On the flipside, remixer Quentin Harris gives the track a little more bass-heavy bump, employing slightly heavier drums and some rich chords, whist making more of Everett's impeccable Fender Rhodes work.

There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the piano-driven goodtime house grooves of Crackazat's floor-filling "What You're Feeling", to the boogie and jazz-funk inspired space-house of Opolopo's brilliant "Put Your Cap On". Review: The productions of Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Vilalobos have always been a little more jazzy and funk-fuelled than many will admit, though these elements - alongside the brilliance of his South American inspired drum programming - have come to the fore in recent times. They're certainly in evidence across the four fine tracks that make up Empirical House. Check, for example, the looped double bass, slack-tuned kicks and snares and woozy vibraphone flourishes of opener "Widodo", or the undulating, almost tropical melody lines and glitchy, outer-space grooves of "Bakasecc". Best of all is the title track, an unflinchingly trippy, woozy and borderline Balearic chunk of minimal house brilliance.

Review: Soundway Records' recent Doin' It In Lagos compilation did a terrific job shining a light on the lesser-known boogie and disco-funk sound of early '80s Nigeria. That set included Livy Ekezemie's "Holiday Actions", one of the standout cuts from the musician/producer's brilliant - but ludicrously hard to find - 1983 album, Friday Night. This reissue is, then, well timed. The set sees Ekezemie effortlessly join the dots between Clavinet-heavy, Afro-tiged disco-funk, boogie, AOR ballads and, in the case of the brilliant "Dedication", his own tribute to Stevie Wonder classic "Superstition". It's a fine set, all told, and one that's shot through with hard-wired early '80s funk.

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. Presented over four coloured pieces of 10" vinyl, Drunk is a thrill-a-minute, mix-tape style trip through the multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker's various inspirations (think skewed hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, left-of-centre electronica, and so on), all of which have been fused and mutated to fit his unique musical perspective. His high standing within the leffield hip-hop community has allowed Thundercat to snag some impressive guest stars, too, including Kendrick Lamarr, blue-eyed soul legend Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Pharell and jazz man Kamasi Washington. Old pal Fly-Lo also lends a hand.

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has something he wants to get off his chest. The much-lauded Detroit producer has teamed up with re-born Italians Do It Better sorts Nite Jewel for "Confess To You", which comes in two distinctive variations. The A-side "Mix" revolves around a tactile, boogie-era synth bassline, late night AM radio synthesizer chords, drifting sax solos and a crunchy, deep house-influenced rhythm track. Arguably even better is the flipside vocal version, which naturally sees Smith, Romana Gonzalez and company deliver a near perfect chunk of '80s soul/deep house fusion. It sounds like a softly spun summer anthem in waiting. Don't take our word for it, though; check out the clips and revel in the track's breezy brilliance.

Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: Fresh from an acclaimed outing on FACES, Giovanni Damico pops up on Marcel Vogel's inspired Lumberjacks In Hell label. The Italian producer is naturally in fine form here, with A-side "Tanzania" - a breezy, house-friendly rework of what sounds like a Tanzanian boogie cut - being one of the most addictive and life-affirming edits we've heard this month. You'll find more wiggling synthesizer lines on the deliciously dreamy and evocative deep house shuffler "I Need Me", while "Are You Somebody" is a successful exercise in subtly beefing up a low-slung disco-funk number. As if that wasn't enough to set the juices flowing, he completes a brilliant E.P with the jazz-fuelled deep house smokiness of "Humans After All".

Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the three tracks; compare, for example, the shuffling tech-house grooves and flamenco guitars of B-side "Channelled", with the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.

This latest drop comes on Sounds Of The City, which has also supported the likes of Walt J and Brian Harden. Review: Since 2004, Eric Prydz has used the alternative Pryda alias to showcase his occasional journeys into the worlds of late '90s style progressive house, and early German trance. "Choo", the title track from his latest three-track Pryda missive, sounds like a mid-90s Paul Van Dyk production, mixed with the melodic complexity of BT's expansive, late '90s "epic house" tracks. Elsewhere, "The Future" is a deeper and woozier affair, albeit one driven forwards by a solid, big room rhythm, while "The End Is Just The Beginning" laces fluttering, melodic arpeggio lines and dreamy chords over a loose-but-solid rhythm track. It, too, sounds like a blast from the past, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Review: REPRESS ALERT! My Love Is Underground return with only their second release of 2013, with MLIU15 introducing the sounds of Dungeon Meat. The new collaborative endeavor between MLIU regular Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha of Back To Basics fame, Dungeon Meat live up to the brash nature of "The Fuck Off Track" with heavy hitting percussion driven house at it's finest. Look out for a label of the same name from Dungeon Meat later this year. Face down Ukrainian producer SE62 returns for MLIU duty for a third time with the hook heavy deep house burn of "True Force".

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

  3. Without Rob (5:46)
Review: Razor 'N' Tape's two previous servings of Dimitri From Brooklyn edits (and, yes, they're the work of legendary DJ/producer Dimitri From Paris) were both must-haves, so hopes are naturally high for this third volume. Predictably, the disco-loving Frenchman is on fine form once more, laying down a trio of interpretations that breathe new life into classic jams. While the A-side "Kettle America" (say it phonetically) is something of a cheeky treat - impressively chopping between hard-wired guitar riffs and the original track's bustling disco groove - it's "I Knead You", an end-of-night, lights-up version of a Sylvester cut that smartly emphasizes the song's gospel origins, that really sparkles. "Without Rob", a harmonica-heavy rearrangement of a well-known favourite, completes another essential package.

Review: The number 13 may be unlucky for some, but it appears to have had no effect on the quality of the Secret Squirrels' club-ready disco manipulations. In fact, it could be argued that the series' 13th vinyl missive is amongst its best to date. A-side "Track 1" makes merry with a throbbing, piano-heavy disco number, adding expert chops, loops and house style drums for guaranteed dancefloor pleasure. The temperature is raised further on flipside "Track 2", where punchy horn lines, life-affirming organ solos, undulating electronics and dubbed-out vocal samples ride a beefed-up disco-funk groove. As usual, the original source material and editors responsible are closely guarded secrets, but neither really matters; these are scorching dancefloor jams, and that's all that counts.

Review: Unstoppable Aussie house maverick Mall Grab takes a deep splash with three more premium cuts. "Pool Party Music" is a loopy, jacking slab of raw fun. If it soundtracks any particular time of a pool party it's when everyone starts pushing each other it. Joyously buzzy. "BFODAAS" takes us back to the earlier chapter of the party where the vibe is warming up, drinks are sliding down and there's not a cloud in the sky. Finally the warm, rolling bleepy "Catching Feelings" catches the moment where you're wrapped in a fluffy towel and cuddled up with pool friends old and new. Bliss.

The 12 inch was never commercially released and soon became a sought after item by collectors and DJ's.
Reissued now from US label Nature Sounds it comes compete with an exclusive remix from infamous US DJ/producer Kon on the flipside . Released in partnership with the Bobo family, this official pressing revisits a dancefloor-ready masterpiece and introduces to a new audience who may not be aware of the 1978 original.

Review: Subb An is the next in line for the Blind Box Series, bringing some of his most outwardly stripped down styles to date to the label. "Push" still packs a serious punch, but it's peppered with all kinds of head-twisting details to keep the all-day-all-night party crowd shuffling along to their hearts content. Dana Ruh does a killer job of remixing the track, turning it into a blissful groover that pivots around a woozy pad tone in its quest for deep house perfection. "Indulge" sports a little more of that Subb An punch, which then gets chiseled back into the curious tones of the Blind Box Remix.

Review: "Give Me Your Love" was produced by Roy Ayers and James "Jaymz" Bedford in 1981, this digger's delight was the one and only single by American singer Sylvia Striplin. It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Notorious B.I.G. production) on their song "Get Money" in 1995 and also by Armand Van Helden on "Full Moon" in 2000. On the flip is the sexy and lo-slung "You Can't Turn Me Away" featuring some sexy funk guitar licks and bass beneath Striplin's powerfully seductive vocals.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: Soopastole now strikes out on his own eponymous 7' edits series and we must say it's impressive. These are well executed and above all much needed edits so credit to the edit! On the A side "Hot Pants" is an edit of the original track and the "dub beats version" (found only on the Urban release in 1988) starts with the drum break. On the flip we have got "Mama Feelgood" which has heavier drums and the instrumental intro and outro.

He tackles Marvin Gaye's classic "Gotta Give It Up" giving it the perfect modern revision for modern dancefloors, pretty damn brilliant if we do say so ourselves. On the B side he lends his Midas touch to Serge Gainsbourg's infamous "Sea, Sex & Sun" allegedly three years in the making, this dirty disco funk nugget includes vocals from both the English and French versions. Exclusive to vinyl and previously unreleased, get your hands on this one before you miss your chance as pressings are limited.

Review: Cody Currie's self-titled EP on Pusic Records was one of the better deep house debuts of 2016. This follow-up for Better Listen is similarly impressive. It sees him showcase a range of tracks that fuse a hip-hop, sample-digging mentality with the dusty, soul-flecked deep house swing of Chicago and Detroit's jazzier producers. The rich and organic sounding opener "Hearty & Healthy"- all hip-hop vocal samples, spacey boogie synth breakdowns and MPC-driven deep house beats - is particularly alluring, though the 'Disco Mix' of "Dynamite" is also superb. The liquid deep house funk of "Beer Machine", where disco samples pop in and out of a rich backing track, feels like a late night anthem in waiting.

Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: Over the past five years Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold have laid down all manner of sizzling disco edit grooves that veer into spaced out, cosmic territory, but on this new joint for Blue Velvet they aim for the jugular with an abundance of cheeky licks from familiar sources. "Angel Dust" is set to get all manner of parties going wild with its classic hooks, while "Turn Me On" takes a smoother approach into romantic climes with equally recognisable sounds repurposed for the modern dancefloor. The samples may be easy to spot, but that just makes this record's appeal even more universal.

Review: Luckily for us and you lot reading this - perhaps not so much for the owners of the original copies - Peven Everett has decided to embark on a bit of a reissue marathon, with plenty of his biggest hits resurfacing on our charts after lengthy hiatuses. The king of 'soulful' house has never sounded so good, and it's thanks to Italy's Groovin label that we're graced with two version of 2007's Feelin You In And Out. In case you don't know this monster of a song, just try to imagine an underground version of R Kelly backed by the sort of dubbed-out house made by peeps like Mood II Swing, and you're somewhere close to it. You also get two versions of the hit, one deep version and another more fast-paced take. Magic.

The list of worlds this groundbreaking song traversed is remarkable. Here Dark Entries compile the four versions that were cut during its two key release phases on GC Recordings in 1981 and 1983 in all their remastered glory. Smouldering, moody and still relevant to so much going on musically, this is true piece of history.
