  3. Let's Break (4:04)

Review: ** REPRESS ** As the name suggests the groove of Soundhacks's Soundstream 12" is a bit less hard cut-up styled but more floating. This doesn't necessarily mean a lack of energy, funk and fun. Expect peak hour house tracks in full effect. Do not expect just another 'French filter house' record. Remember: it is Soundhack who is in charge here. Full satisfaction guaranteed!

Review: While he may have spent the last few years pursuing a deep house agenda for labels such as Bosconi and Fly By Night, Bologna-based producer Riccio earned his stripes providing high class reworks for the now legendary Super Value Edits label. Here he returns to his roots with a four-track onslaught of tasty scalpel works for Editorial. There's naturally much to admire, from the string-laden disco-funk pulse of "Put Some Love In Your Life" and dewy-eyed, near Balearic disco wooziness of "Little Drummer", to the storming, peaktime brilliance of "I've Loved It" (our pick of a strong EP) and woodwind-laden loop funk of "Flute".

Cat: EAUXRE 01. Rel: 15 Oct 12
  1. Shepherd's Brine
  2. Waterfall
Review: Yes! Rrose's Eaux imprint makes an impressive virgin step into the reissue game, gathering up two of the producer's latter-day highlights of the Sandwell District canon for a much needed new edition. Originally released in late 2011, Merchant Of Salt remains our favourite clutch of Rrose productions and this reissue is a must for anyone who missed out first time round. Lead track "Shepherd's Brine" gravitates expertly into rhythmic life from the acidic fluid moments of the opening bars, building with intoxicating ease towards a mid point tunnelling groove that's lent no small degree of spectral wonder by the deep set vocal waves. Proceedings plunge further into the foggy recesses of uncompromising, mordant rhythm on the wholly visceral, gut wrenching exercise in sound sculpture that is "Waterfall". Mere sound clips don't really do the laser guided menace inherent in this track justice.

  2. Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - "Aleluia" (3:52)
Review: Two silky sides of Brazilian disco soul on Mr Bongo's perennial Brazil 45s series. First up, long-haired lothario samba fusionista Marcos teams up with Leon Ware for a pristine polished piece of early 80s disco funk. Golden harmonies, staccato vocals and a super juicy bassline; it's not hard to see why it was his best selling single. Flip for the equally smooth "Alleluia" from Brazilian boogie gospelist; this one is all about the percussion heavy breakdown. Proper sunshine block party business.

Review: Daniel Paul and Jens Augustowsky have been steering Cabinet Records for twenty years now, establishing the label as one of Berlin's most reliable outlets for techy, housey fare and contributing their own weight in productions under various aliases. Cab Drivers is one of their longest-running collaborations with Playroom their 11th 12" release under the name in those two decades, and their studio understanding is quite evident in the productions. Both the ten minute title cut and "A Less Complex Situation" are understated but wholly effective DJ tools with the subtle acid modulations of the former just edging it.

Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

  4. Rim & The Believers - "I'm Not Going To Let You Go" (3:11)
  5. Rim & The Believers - "Peace Of Mind" (3:52)
Review: Having re-released Rim Kwaku's long lost Rim Arrives album, BBE follow it up with more dusty disco treasures from the Ghanaian hit maker's repertoire. From the blistering horns and thundering drum rolls of the near-nine-minute romp "Shine The Ladies" right the way through the looser, more Afrobeat-focussed "Peace Of Mind" by way of the emphatic Stevie Wonder-style showmanship of "I'm A Songwriter" it's a collection that still sparkles with soul 30 years after they were recorded. If you're unaware of Rim's story, you'd be wise to check it; from Quincy Jones endorsements to homelessness in the space of 24 hours, Rim's tales are as serious as his music is funky.

  4. S Channel - "Polar Express Pigeon" (5:31)
Review: New imprint Blorp is described by its' creators as an outlet for "dream music from outer space". It's a fairly accurate description, because the four tracks showcased on this first label sampler deliver spacey, Motor City-influenced deep house goodness in spades. No Moon opens proceedings with the gentle acid lines, reverb-heavy dream chords and undulating machine drums of "AoE Cutz", before Gnork doffs a cap to early '90s ambient house and intelligent techno with the luscious "Lose Control". Flip for Douala's "Untitled 1", a broken beat/ultra deep house hybrid that evokes memories of Neo Image's recent work for Pacific Rhythm, and the deep space sludge of S Channel's trippy "Polar Express Pigeon".

There's plenty or tracks here, but the standouts are definitely "Alice Practice", a cross between Boys Noize and some deranged industrial outfit form the 80s; "Air War" a glitchy, technoid thumper; "1991" their most concrete electro piece and "Black Panther", one of the most moving soundscapesque pieces we know.

Review: Later in the year, Jeff Mills will release the long-awaited follow-up to his legendary Exhibition mix CD. Details are relatively scarce at present, though according to its creator the CD/DVD package "explains a lot about the mindset, and the concepts, and the procedure of how a DJ does what he does". In a bid to raise interest in the project - not that the Detroit legend needs much help in that regard - he's put together this 12" of previously unheard studio material. It's typical of Mills' floor-friendly exploits, with all four tracks fusing intergalactic, outer-space electronics (see opener "Signals To Atomix One") with rolling Motor City grooves (complete with the usual relentless cymbals) and bubbling basslines.

Then they release this, an LP comprised solely of two wondrously extended work outs from the troupe. "Expensive Shit" famously tells the tale of Fela's brush with the jaded law while "Water No Get Enemy" speaks - or rather sings - for itself. One of Fela's many notable and hugely influential releases; your collection isn't complete without it.

Review: In its lifetime Finale Sessions have seen releases from the likes of Fred P, Innerspace Halflife and Amir Alexander, and the label's latest 12", Finale Undergound Vol 1, sees three similarly respected artists come together on one EP for some properly deep moves. Steven Tang delivers the suitably titled "Immense", a moody slice of house percussion positively swimming in Tang's trademark pads, while Metrolux boss XDB joins him on the A-side for some weighty yet refined house music, pairing abstract tones with some submerged bassline swing unfolding out into some heavily delayed, oven warm chords. FXHE associate Luke Hess finishes up with "Suplication"; though it shares the same dubby qualities as the rest it's the most impressively driving track of the three, combining Motor City dynamism with Chicago's breezy house.

Review: Serious funk vibes abound on this repress from 2011. London duo Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel lay down a stripped-back bass n' breakbeat combo allowing full emphasis on the tightly plucked bass, tight horn noodles and chanty Jay Kay flavoured singing. Think Kraak & Smaak circa Boogie Angst with just a bit more trad JBs style funk. Flip for an equally funky adventure courtesy of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Giving the Hot 8 Brass Band a run for their money, it's a sweeping series of dreamy horns that can't help but suck you deep into the mix.

Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

Volume 2 (Forward) features three funky loops of processed acoustics and overdubbed drums, similar to what you could expect from an early Revenge record. Bass licks and guitar twangs frequent in and out of a closed hat dominated groove in "Forward (part 1)" while subtle vocals and disco strings are added in "Forward (part2 - The Anthem Version).Sharing the B-side is "Deep Mood" held together by thick claps, glitter keys and swooning horns.

Review: More conceptual techno from the The Wizard. Jeff Mills presents the Domino Effect, the first installment of 12" EP from Jeff Mills new solo LP, Free Fall Galaxy, the ninth chapter of his "science-fiction story" Sleeper Wakes and first since 2014's Emerging Crystal Universe. It is a sublime serving of Millsian intergalactic ambience on "The Hunted", while "Solar Crossroads" sees the man employ his classic, cyclical minimalism on this bleepy and hypnotic groove full of rich strings his magical 909 touch. On the flip he takes us deeper into the void on "Rabid Star Clusters" with its snarling use of 303 acid and "Triangularism" which keeps things stripped and minimal on this wonderfully executed method of trance induction. Often imitated yet never matched, Mills still has it and this EP is brilliant from start to finish. Oh... And that cover art!

Review: Scotsman in Berlin Ewan Smith aka Youandewan is back, after releases on the likes of 2nd Drop, Ornaments and Secretsundaze but this time for Australian label Voyage. Kicking off with some high tech soul in the form of "Ciel" traversing that same universe as Space Dimension Controller, he then gives us the emotive, slow-mo deep electro of "Vessel" featuring spacey pads, huge bass pulsations and dreamy melodies. Finally "Stranger (Glad Eye mix)" gets into some dusty, jazzy/soul business but still keeping that beautifully bittersweet melancholia intact like before. Watch out for his upcoming LP on the mighty AUS too!

Review: Given Aaron FIT Siegel's close link to Detroit's finest talents, we weren't expecting him to release a 12" by an artist such as Moscow's Oleg Buyanov, dubbed simply as OL. But, don't get us wrong, this is a great move for the label, and we're happy to see Siegel branching out into other domains. Also, it has to be said that OL's tunes have much in common with the Motor City's tradition, anyway. The lead tune "Lada Passenger" is a jazzy house experiment, a dance sketch with plenty of free-roaming harmonies and effects circling around it. On the flip, "Study Drum" has more in common with the typical deep house framework, and "Life Span" warms our winter chills with a deep, glowing bassline that you simply must test out at high volumes...

Review: Tel Aviv groove ambassador Naduve gets his sweat on as he pegs it to the first hairy palm he can find... And crosses it with pure cosmic silver. "Ready Set Go" is a star-gazing web of twinkles over a slow-and-low drum arrangement while the Saturn Memories remix takes us into much more unforgiving aluminium territories. "10k From Essaouira" adds more fuel to his creative fire with a tech-edged groove lightly sugared with Tuvan throat singing. Finally, the in-demand Israeli gets the shake of his dreams as we strut steadily into a deep filtered loopy experience that sparkles in all the right places. Magic, as with everything else from Disco Halal.

Review: Under the now familiar Spacetravel alias, Luca Cara has released some fine music over the last couple of years, most notably a fine debut album for Perlon. Here he pops up on Japan's Cabaret imprint with a four-track EP that largely looks to Detroit for inspiration. The sci-fi inspired futurism of the Motor City can be clearly heard in the darting synth lines, fizzing cymbal programming and undulating bass of opener "Axion", before "Change Planet Stacion" adds a little acid-fuelled Chicago jack to the late '80s Transmat template. "Spirit" is darker and creepier in tone, while "Ankor What" successfully fixes vintage techno percussion and synths to a rich, deep house style bassline and chords.

Review: Another work of Soul Jazz curatorial gold: Nigeria Soul Fever is a detailed gatefold trip into one of Nigeria's richest chapters in music. Heavy trade restrictions allowed them to develop their own style without too much US or European influence and the result is an array of national talent who largely remained legends within their own borders. The range is mesmerizing; the sinewy synth and playground vocal Q&A of Benis Cletin's "Get Up & Dance", the ballroom disco soul of Tee Mac's "Living Everyday", the soulful afrofunk folk of Jimmy Sherry's "Nwaeze", the gut-punching power of Arakatula's album finale "Wake Up Africa". This is a treasure trove of unreleased gems that capture a truly unique time.

Review: Last year saw Cultures of Soul, American crate diggers extraordinaire, serve up a fine compilation of Caribbean disco, soul, and boogie in the shape of Tropical Disco Hustle. Clearly they were only getting started as a year later we find a second installment from Cultures of Soul which broadens the remit to take in the flavours of St. Lucia and Guadeloupe too. Trinidad & Tobago calypso act Wild Fire feature prominently, providing three tracks of which the Moog laden "Try Making Love" is a compilation highlight. "Music Makes The World Go Round" by The Hamilton Brothers being another, a delicious horn laden, rasping disco bumper that DJs will find a lot of mileage in. A fine compilation.
