Review: Pixel82 hails from Portugal and has been making music for the last 20 years. Early on they made punk/industrial and were then in a metal band but now they deal in powerful techno. Infinity is a concept album about "the continuum of life, of a constant loop that evolves over time. It is a discovery of myself musically, a rediscovery of the past to find the future." It is also full of club cuts designed to drive a crowd into overdrive. These are emotive tunes laden with synths that bring rushes of euphoria and plenty of psychedelic colours. It's a widescreen and rewarding listen.

Review: This is the first official vinyl release of the previously CD only collection of Pixies live performances on the BBC. Fans of the band know what a mythical live band the Pixies are. And what better way to experience that emotion then these recordings collected from their earlier years of the late 80s and early 90s? Included are many of the early hits like 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Wave of Mutilation' and 'Allison', mainly from BBC studio sessions and the occasional live recording. 4AD have done an amazing job with this release spreading it across three pieces of vinyl too.

The spiky pop hooks, humour and off-kilter raunch are here in spades, yet more importantly 'Head Carrier' sounds like the work of a band comfortable in its own skin once again.

Review: Over the last few years, the Pixies have become surprisingly prolific, serving up a string of albums that move away from their punky alt-rock roots and further towards more grandiose, immersive territory. They've subtly shifted the dial even further on Doggerel, which on this 'deluxe' edition comes packaged in a bespoke hardback case. With the assistance of producer Tom Delgaty, drummer David Lovering and bassist Paz Lenchantin, Joey Santiago and Black Francis have chosen to offer up a string of widescreen epics that variously touch on folk-rock, 1960s dream-pop, Americana, turn-of-the-90s alternative rock and the kind of classic, timeless-sounding indie that should appeal to those who came of age in the 1990s. Highlights include the psych-tinged 'There's a Moon On' and the hooky, Pulp-does-Americana flex of 'Vault of Heaven'.

"In The Arms of Mrs Mark Of Cain" starts proceedings on a gothic-Western hybrid tip, setting things up perfectly for any song named "Graveyard Hill". Realistically when that track does arrive it switches the mood with a nod to the band's archetypal punk-infused sound, and that's precisely the point. Apparently betting the farm on this one, it's got everything from psych-folk to Tim Burton-ish ghoulish wit, making for the band's finest hour since their 2004 reformation.

Review: With Salt og Vind Pjusk retums from an eight year album hiatus. This release is also the first seeing Pjusk as a solo project consisting of Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik. Salt og Vind (Salt and Wind) is, not surprisingly, about the forces of nature and the contrast between the volatile and the existing. In a wider sense it is about man's inability or struggle to grasp the eternal and instead seek temporary fulfillment. Salt og Vind is Pjusk's 4th album for 12k and comes in with an urgency and drive not often seen in their work.From the noisy, atonal start to "Det som aldri forsvinner" to the lush, exotic rhythmic pulse of "Ordene som blaste bort" there is a breadth of sound from the icy sublime to the detailed complexity. Pjusk's sense of space and production, as always, makes Salt og Vind an expansive and deep listen.

Review: It's not easy to articulate how much anticipation surrounded Never Let Me Go when it arrived in March 2022. Three years in the making (well, probably more, but recorded between 2019 and 2021), it broke around a decade of silence from the iconic epic rock band, marking their eighth studio album, and when we say 'broke', we really do mean breaking things. Big, emotionally-charged, stadium-filling things, that somehow resonate with a cross-generational audience united in the simple fact they're all humans.

Granted, not in the truest sense, nevertheless, it's hard to think go many guitar outfits that have simultaneously managed to sound so niche, while mastering the art of mass crossover appeal. Review: As Warp gears up to celebrate its 30th birthday, it seems fitting that the label should be putting out a fresh album from one of its longest serving artists. As Plaid, Andy Turner and Ed Handley played a significant role in defining the label's approach to electronic music during the "Artificial Intelligence" era in the mid 1990s. All these years on, they're still capable of crafting fizzing, melodious, off-kilter electronic listening music that defies lazy categorization. "Polymer" is a hugely enjoyable and entertaining set, with highlights including the jumpy beats, post-electro melodies and mind-altering acid lines of "Los", the metallic bounce of "Maru" - a kind of twisted take on Afro-tech that's amongst their most club-ready cuts of recent times - and the disturbed, Autechre-style clang of "Recall".

Review: On their latest album, revered UK electronica duo Plaid are grabbing the advent of AI-art by the horns and seeing where they can take their sound. The answer appears to lie on a fictional planet called Falorx, and the titular Feorm is the name of the festival that takes place there. Yes, it's all steeped in sci-fi iconography even before we get into the mechanics of how they've used AI to generate the music and the visuals, but beyond all that, if you love Plaid, you'll love this album. Everything about their beauteous, intricate machine music remains, with those alien melodies and needlepoint sound design tropes present and correct as two trailblazers help nudge us a bit further towards whatever the future holds, without making it sound upsettingly different in the process.

Review: Last year East Bay, California by way of Austin, Texas newfound hardcore bruisers, Planet On A Chain, karate kicked in the door of Revelation Records with their immensely pissed out debut full-length Boxed In. A group of seasoned veterans in their own right, with members previously operating in Look Back & Laugh, Tear It Up, Talk Is Poison, Dead Nation and Mutilated Tongue, the snarling energy they bring to the table exudes all of the traits of sharpened hardcore lifers. Following on from their 11-track, 19-minute sonic car crash of a debut comes an even uglier sophomore effort in the form of Culture Of Death, sharpening, honing and steeping their sound in even more crossover thrash meets beatdown chaos. Ultimately, POAC simultaneously celebrate hardcore's purpose and past while also cementing its increasing relevancy and legacy in the modern spectrum.
