Review: According to the maestro himself, Roger Eno, The Skies They Shift Like Chords is a record about transience, subtle and pronounced changes, and, in many ways, the march of evolution in music and life itself. Review: Ensamble Acustico was conceived in the early 1980s by Billy Pereyra and Eduardo Roland in Blancarena, a resort on the coast of the Rio de la Plata, east of Colonia, Uruguay. In 1989, after only a few performances, the duo released their first and only album: a cassette of eight songs titled Un Exceso De Luz (An Excess Of Light), co-released by independent labels Perro Andaluz (Uruguay) and Circe (Argentina). The album was critically acclaimed and lauded as the first 'new age' project to come out of Uruguay. Yet lumping Un Exceso De Luz into that most vast and heterogenous confluence of musical genres, akin to 'world music', dismisses the alchemical breakdown of minimalism with gestures of contemporary jazz, exemplified by the shifting harmonic figures of 'En Los Campos de Colonia' ('In the Fields of Colonia'). Pereyra and Roland sound strings in tandem, forming harmonic compositions that generate unexpected resonances. Together they build a climatic character that gives the sound of Ensamble Acustico its most distinctive seal, sharing more with the aesthetics of contemporary jazz than the nebulous new age label.

Review: REPRESS WITH NEW OBI-STRIP: Japanese label P-Vine sure know how to pick out the essential spiritual jazz reissues. This is another gold standard that came originally on Strata East in 1974. Vocals feature throughout and often soar to the highest of heights and make it a charismatic album. Sample hounds and hip hop lovers might well recognise the track 'Optimystical' which has been pillaged by Detroit great Andres before now. elsewhere there is real freeform magic on 'Music Is Nothing But A Prayer', cosmic exploration on 'Trace Of Trane' and heartwarming beauty on the closer 'Peace (Salaam)'.

Review: Enter Shikari belong to a particularly impressive hardcore subset that seem to get better with each passing year and record. A Kiss For the Whole World is their seventh studio outing, but it sounds almost like a band exploding into action for the first time. A high energy declaration of intent and bold approach to stamping their personality down on the planet they so eagerly want to embrace.
Uplifting would be another - far simpler - way to describe what's here. These are anthems in the truest sense, with tracks like 'Dead Wood' reaching for the kind of euphoric sonic heights few outfits can hope to come close to. A rousing, unifying number. Of course, in typical Shikari fashion, it's not actually all so lead- single-worthy, with some of the finest moments far less in your face. Such as the classical-inspired 'Bloodshot (Coda)', or the half-time drum & bass tech of 'Feed Your Soul'.
