Review: Thrash metal "Big 4" alumni, Megadeth, make their much-anticipated return this year with, 'The Sick, The Dying & The Dead.' The sixteenth full-length from the speedy, war-obsessed titans marks their first album since 2016's, 'Dystopia', making it the longest gap between projects frontman Dave Mustaine has ever allowed to transpire. Featuring drummer Dirk Verbeuren making his debut with the group, as well as bass duties being handled by Steve Di Giorgio of Testament (following the controversial dismissal of long-time member David Ellefson), the progressive-metal leaning material has been poured over to an astute degree. With a seething, near-seven-minute epic, 'Night Stalkers', boasting an Ice-T collaboration (whose love for the metal scene appears to have been totally rekindled by his revival of Body Count), Mustaine and co seem utterly determined to make Megadeth's epic return as dynamic, diverse and memorable as possible. Strap in for an endless barrage of shredding riffage, complex solos, and of course, the signature snarl which their frontman has practically made an artform all on its own.

Review: Laggy Panteli and Zeno Messis (aka Megalon) were cult techno artists back in the mid-nineties. They released seminal albums like 1994's Pandora's Box and mixed up ambient, Detroit techno, electro, European electronics and their own experiences of London's acid house scene. The good folks at Above Board have been digging in the duo's vaults and put together this collection of all of their best EPs across four crucial sides of vinyl. This is deep, atmospheric techno for the small hours with the likes of skittish rhythmic workout 'Sorcerer' (Funky Magus mix) sitting next to the widescreen acid styles of 'Semblance' (Dim B) and the shimmering leads of future tribal cut 'Transition'.

Review: Trinities is the latest LP from electroacoustic percussionist Jake Meginsky, and marks something of a life milestone in the life of the artist. Both the birth of Meginsky's daughter and the death of his friend and mentor (and the subject of his celebrated 2018 documentary, Full Mantis), Milford Graves, coincided with the making of the album. Whether or not personal events were intended to shape it at its inception, it certainly ended up being imbued with their traces later on in the process. Trinities is a diggers' curio's dream, with just four pieces segueing through seemingly endless gamelan-esque variations that verge through synthetic reverb and a subtly tense bed of analog hiss. It certainly lives up to the label's description of being made up of a series of "elusive ballets of resonance and negative space", with all its quizzical knockings and hard-panned delights resounding like sudden, surprise by-surprise-twists in the dance of life.

Review: Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira has an eclectic palette, with his music blending every influence from 50s trash rock, garage, surf, and goth. 'The Hefker Girl' is a new album, coinciding with a recent reissue from his back catalogue, 'Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic' - an LP which ironizes the neoliberal ethos of postwar America. This one, by contrast, charts Megira's collaborative jams with fellow Israeli instrumentalist Michal Kahan, and is a more earnest, heads-down affair. Expect reverb-drenched new wave, 80s tropes and talent on the guitar beyond common comprehension.

With this new reissue spread across a mammoth four sides of vinyl, you can be damn sure you’ll get your money’s worth from Megira, a modern-day punk polymath.

Review: Truly living up to its name, Venusia - a word that has three meanings; a genus of moth, town in Italy, and the Roman goddess of love (who, as it happens, was named after the planet, Venus) - is essentially an homage to the fragile beauty of life, and the sense that our being present in this existence is something of a marvel. Review: Wewantsounds have got a first-ever reissue of Meiko Kaji's Hajiki Uta album with original artwork and new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha who actually spoke to the artist for the occasion. Film fans will recognise 'Urami Bushi' which was the theme song for the Female Prisoner Scorpion series which was used in Kill Bill Vol 2, while 'Onna No Jumon' was also the theme song for Female Prisoner Scorpion - Jailhouse 41 film. The rest of the record features atmospheric moments and sombre singing over slow-burning grooves, some funkier sounds like 'Hitori Kaze' and plenty of innovative sounds in between.

Review: Thomas Melchior's take on minimalist house and techno - wonky and off-kilter, but surprisingly funky, far-sighted and pleasingly atmospheric - is amongst the most accessible and ear-catching around. It's a sound that works as well on albums as it does on singles and EPs, so it's somewhat surprising to discover that Vulnerabilities is his first full-length as Melchior Productions since 2007. It's been worth the wait though, with the veteran producer offering up tracks that combine brilliantly programmed, often off-kilter drums with smooth but druggy basslines, tactile chords, addictive melodic refrains and his usual subtle (and occasional not to subtle) nods towards deep house, dub techno, two-step garage, trippy ambient and the quirky, funk-fuelled eccentricity of Ricardo Villalobos productions.
